12:59pm Monday 10th March 2008 in Local Sports Round-up By Lee Martin
Steve Ellis from Claygate-based Foley ABC continued his impressive start to the season by beating M Rendell from Berinsford ABC by a unanimous decision over three two-minute rounds on the Bereinsford Club Dinner Show in Oxford on Saturday night.
This was a rematch after Ellis had beaten Rendell on the Foley dinner show in November in what was then the fight of the night.
The rematch did not disappoint, Ellis staying calm and sticking to his boxing superbly.
The first round was close, with both boxers showing each other a lot of respect and feeling each other out.
The second round exploded, with both boys opening up with combinations of punches to the head and body.
As the round progressed, Ellis's stronger punching power and workrate - particularly to the body - started to take effect and had him clearly winning the round.
The third round, just like the second, was a credit to both boxers, as they traded furious blows in the centre of the ring.
Ellis's ability to step back and pick off Rendell from distance with cleaner scoring punches saw him home with something to spare as he was awarded the unanimous decision.
The referee announced at the end of the fight that, for purists of amateur boxing, this was a fight to savour.
Ellis will now be entered in the Senior National ABA Champions in April.
