Foley Amateur Boxing Club saw the much awaited opening of their new gym last Friday. Since receiving news that redevelopment of the Foley Arms would mean they had to move, members of the club have gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure its future.
Weston Green Sports club in Thames Ditton offered the struggling boxing club a life line by leasing part of their premises for use as a gym. Now, with the refurbishment ready, thanks to a very generous donation from Youngs, the club is no longer on the ropes!
Having purchased new equipment and signed a long-term lease agreement with the sports club, Foley’s future seems assured.
The evening was a huge success, with more than 100 people attending to wish the club luck, with many Foley boys from the past and present there alongside family and friends, including the deputy mayor of Elmbridge and local councillor Tannia Shiply. Also received were good luck messages from Barry McGuigan, former boxer and WBA world featherweight champion, International Boxing Hall of Fame member and previous Sports Personality of the Year winner, and from Joe Cole, Chelsea and England footballer.
This is a new beginning for the club, who have not forgotten their roots but are now looking to spread their branches near and far through the boxing circuit.
