NHS Surrey urges screening as "Jade Goody effect" wears off

NHS Surrey has renewed its efforts to get more people in for cervical screening, after the “Jade Goody effect” begins to wear off.

Screening shot up when the reality TV star died last year, but one in four aged 25 to 49 are still putting themselves ta risk by not having smear tests.

The message to women in Surrey during European Cervical Cancer Prevention week, which starts on January 24, is: “Don’t put yourself at risk – keep your smear tests up to date.”

Dr Ruth Milton, Director of Public Health for NHS Surrey said: “These figures are really worrying because it means that a quarter women in this age group in Surrey are putting themselves at risk by not taking up the free screening test.

“The good news is that cervical cancer can be prevented. Screening is offered at your GP practice and only takes a few moments. If you think you are due a screen just make an appointment with your practice nurse.”

Smear tests are free and the view that you are too young to worry is wrong so book yours now.
