Win a pair of top-price tickets to see The Pitmen Painters at the National Theatre

Smash hit play The Pitmen Painters returns to the National Theatre this December for a limited season.

Written by Lee Hall, author of Billy Elliot, the play brings to life the story of the Ashington Group – miners from Northumberland who became celebrated artists.

Winner of Best New Play at the 2008 Evening Standard Awards, The Pitmen Painters is a funny and deeply moving production which has delighted audiences during previous sold-out runs at the National Theatre, and on tour.

In 1934, a group of miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class.

Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years their work was acquired by prestigious collectors, but every day they worked, as before, down the mine.
